The Narrative

The Soul of the Object

This striking decorative plate is a masterwork of Moroccan craftsmanship, born from the ancient ateliers of Fez. It presents a captivating contrast between a deep, lustrous emerald green ceramic glaze and a sophisticated overlay of intricately engraved nickel silver (maillechort). The central design is a radiating medallion of eight stylized Hamsa (Khamsa) hands, a powerful and ubiquitous symbol in North African culture believed to ward off the evil eye and bring protection, power, and good fortune to the household.

The creation of this piece involves multiple skilled artisans. First, the clay base is thrown, fired, and coated in the rich green enamel. Simultaneously, a metalworker painstakingly cuts and hand-engraves sheets of silver alloy with traditional arabesque and geometric patterns using fine chisels, a technique known as 'naqsh'. The metal pieces are then carefully fitted and secured onto the ceramic body with small, decorative studs, creating a seamless blend of textures and materials.

More than just a decorative object, this plate is a piece of cultural heritage. The swirling filigree patterns on the rim and the detailed work within each Hamsa hand reflect centuries of artistic tradition passed down through generations of Maalems (master craftsmen). It is designed to be a conversation piece, perfect for displaying on a wall or as a stunning centerpiece on a table, bringing a touch of Moroccan mystique and protective energy to any space.

"Every imperfection tells a story of human hands at work."
