The Soul of the Object
This mesmerizing charger plate is a stunning example of mixed-media Moroccan craftsmanship, where the earthy art of pottery meets the refined skill of metalwork. The base is a substantial red clay platter, bathed in a rich, jewel-toned emerald green glaze that catches the light with a deep luster. Over this vibrant canvas, a master metalworker has painstakingly applied an elaborate lattice of German silver (alpaca). The design is a complex geometric star radiating from the center, framed by interlocking arabesques and filigree, all secured with tiny, hand-hammered studs.
Originating from the artisan workshops of Marrakech, this piece represents the collaboration of two distinct guilds. The potter first shapes and fires the clay, creating the perfect form and color. Then, the 'dinandier' (metalsmith) takes over, cutting, embossing, and fitting the silver overlay with precision. This technique, known as metal-on-ceramic, is a beloved tradition that adds a layer of opulence and texture to classic pottery.
More than just a plate, this charger is a versatile piece of art. It is substantial enough to serve as a dramatic centerpiece on a large dining table, holding fruits or candles, yet its flat profile and stunning detail make it an equally impressive work of wall art. It brings a touch of Moorish grandeur and the timeless beauty of Moroccan design into any home.
"Every imperfection tells a story of human hands at work."
