The Narrative

The Soul of the Object

This magnificent decorative charger is a testament to the masterful inlay traditions of Essaouira, Morocco, formerly known as Mogador. Handcrafted with exceptional precision, it transforms a sturdy wooden base into a canvas of contrasting textures and materials. The design is a captivating interplay of creamy, hand-carved camel bone and gleaming metalwork—a blend of brass and nickel silver—creating a piece of true heirloom quality that reflects centuries of artistic refinement.

The central focus is a bold, stylized trefoil motif, rendered in intricately carved bone with delicate metal filigree overlays that add depth and shadow. This is surrounded by concentric bands of complex geometric patterns, including striking triangular panels filled with warm orange and red pigments, and borders studded with small, jewel-like glass cabochons in ruby and sapphire tones. The outer rim is defined by a sharp, rhythmic sawtooth border of alternating bone and dark wood triangles.

More than just a decorative object, this charger is a piece of cultural history. It serves as a dramatic statement piece when mounted on a wall, catching the light with every metallic glint, or as a luxurious centerpiece for a large dining table. Each piece is unique, carrying the individual touch of the Maalem (master craftsman) who spent dozens of hours bringing its complex pattern to life.

"Every imperfection tells a story of human hands at work."
