The Soul of the Object
This spectacular decorative platter is a masterful fusion of two distinct Moroccan artisan traditions: ceramic glazing and metalwork. Hailing from the coastal city of Safi, renowned for its pottery, this piece begins as hand-thrown earthenware. It is meticulously hand-painted with a complex array of traditional arabesque and geometric motifs in a vibrant palette of turquoise, cobalt blue, burnt orange, and deep black, before being fired to a high gloss finish.
What sets this piece apart is the subsequent application of intricate metal filigree, likely nickel silver (known locally as 'alpaca'). A skilled metalworker painstakingly shapes and applies the metal overlay, outlining the painted patterns and creating the distinctive scalloped rim. Small enamel dots mimicking coral and turquoise are embedded within the metalwork, adding texture and jewel-like depth to the design. The central motif forms an endless knot, symbolizing eternity and continuity in Moorish design.
This platter is not merely a serving vessel but a substantial piece of wall art, embodying hours of collaborative craftsmanship between the potter and the metal-smith. It brings the vibrant energy and ancient artistry of the Moroccan souk directly into the home, serving as a stunning centerpiece or a dramatic wall hanging.
"Every imperfection tells a story of human hands at work."
