The Soul of the Object
This magnificent decorative charger is a testament to the master craftsmanship of Fes, blending two distinct Moroccan artisan traditions into one stunning piece. At its heart is a hand-thrown ceramic plate, adorned with the classic cobalt blue and white geometric and floral patterns that have defined Fassi pottery for centuries. This cool ceramic base is then encased in an opulent overlay of hammered brass and copper, creating a striking contrast of texture and color that is both regal and captivating.
The metalwork is a masterpiece in itself, meticulously crafted using ancient techniques of repoussé and chasing. Artisans hammer the metal from the reverse side to create raised, swirling designs and radiating panels that catch the light, further detailed with engraved patterns from the front. Small, jewel-like glass cabochons are set within the metalwork, adding a touch of vibrant color. The entire piece is framed by a sturdy, decorated metal rim, giving it a substantial presence.
More than just a decorative object, this charger is a piece of living history, evoking the splendor of Andalusian courts and old-world Moroccan palaces. It is designed to be a captivating focal point, ready to be mounted on a wall to bring a touch of exotic elegance and timeless artistry to any home. Each piece is unique, carrying the individual mark of the Maalems (master craftsmen) who collaborated to create it.
"Every imperfection tells a story of human hands at work."
