The Narrative

The Soul of the Object

This magnificent dome-topped chest is a masterpiece of Moroccan craftsmanship, hailing from the coastal city of Essaouira (formerly Mogador). Traditionally used as a wedding chest to hold a bride's precious dowry, it is a functional work of art that tells a story of ancient techniques passed down through generations. The chest is constructed from a sturdy wooden base, painstakingly covered with hand-carved panels of camel bone.

The bone is treated with natural henna dyes to achieve its warm, amber patina and then intricately incised with geometric and floral motifs typical of Islamic design. The entire piece is framed with embossed German silver (a white metal alloy) trim, studded with hundreds of metal tacks, and accented with vibrant turquoise and coral-colored stones.

Sturdy, leather-wrapped metal handles on either side allow for easy transport, adding to its rugged yet elegant charm. This is not merely a storage item but a conversation piece, bringing a touch of exotic North African history and artistry into any home. Due to the handmade nature, each chest is a unique creation with its own slight variations.

"Every imperfection tells a story of human hands at work."
