The Soul of the Object
This magnificent circular zellige piece is a masterclass in Moroccan geometric art. At its heart lies a complex, eight-pointed starburst that blooms into an intricate floral motif, rendered in a striking palette of deep indigo, emerald green, mustard yellow, and Natural Clay against a soft mauve background. The central design is framed by a mesmerizing, interlacing arabesque border in complementary blues, greens, and oranges, creating a sense of infinite movement and harmony. Each individual tile has been painstakingly hand-chiseled from Glazed Natural Clay, a testament to the ancient skills passed down through generations of artisans in Fes.
Crafted using the traditional zellige technique, this medallion is not merely decorative but a piece of living history. The process begins with raw clay, molded, fired, and glazed in wood-burning ovens. Master craftsmen, known as 'maâlems', then use a sharp hammer called a 'menqach' to precisely cut each tiny tessera from the enameled tiles. These thousands of unique pieces are assembled face-down in a reverse mosaic puzzle before being set with mortar, resulting in a durable and breathtakingly detailed work of art.
This versatile piece is designed to be the centerpiece of any space. It can be mounted as a spectacular statement wall art, bringing the opulent aesthetic of a Moorish palace into your home. Alternatively, placed upon a wrought-iron base, it becomes a luxurious tabletop suitable for both indoor salons and covered outdoor patios, offering a durable surface that radiates authentic Moroccan charm and sophistication.
"Every imperfection tells a story of human hands at work."
