The Narrative

The Soul of the Object

This exquisite zellige tabletop is a vibrant testament to the centuries-old tile-making traditions of Fez. At its heart lies a radiating geometric star, a classic motif in Islamic art representing unity and the cosmos. The pattern explodes outwards in concentric layers of intricate tessellations, utilizing a rich palette of deep burgundy, azure and cobalt blues, emerald green, mustard yellow, and stark black and white. Each tiny tile is a brushstroke in a larger masterpiece of sacred geometry. Handcrafted by master artisans, or 'Maâlems', the process begins with raw clay, hand-molded, dried, and fired in traditional kilns. The glazed tiles are then painstakingly hand-chiseled using a sharp hammer called a 'menqach' into precise geometric shapes. These thousands of individual pieces are laid face-down in a complex puzzle, a skill passed down through generations, before being bound together with cement to form a solid, durable surface. More than just furniture, this tabletop is a piece of architectural history. It brings the soulful elegance of a Moroccan riad courtyard into your home. Perfect as a striking dining table or a resilient outdoor patio centerpiece, it promises to be a conversation starter, weathering the elements with grace while retaining its brilliant luster.

"Every imperfection tells a story of human hands at work."
